Where is the Deep Throat of Today?
June 1, 2005
I don't care about Deep Throat.
Watergate is long ago, and Nixon is dead and gone.
What I care about are the high crimes and misdemeanors that our current President has been committing, and what I want to know is, where is the Deep Throat of today?
Who will come forward with the American equivalent of the Downing Street memo?
Who will point reporters in the direction of facts and documents that directly implicate Bush in this ongoing torture scandal?
Who will defy the goons of this White House, including Karl Rove and Dick Cheney, and come clean as John Dean did way back when?
For what we have today is every bit as big a scandal--if not bigger--than Watergate.
We have a President who isn't covering up a third-rate burglary.
We have a President who is burglarizing our democracy, tearing it down and boxing it up and carting it away in broad daylight.
Who died and made Bush crook and king?
He sure acts the parts, with his low and dishonest war and his grabbing of royal powers to do whatever he feels like in the conduct of that war, including torture. Then there is his violation of one treaty after another, and finally his disdain for basic due process rights of citizens and noncitizens alike.
When Nixon acted like a crook and king, Deep Throat and John Dean blew the whistle on him.
Who will blow it now?
Our democracy awaits that whistle.
