Half a million people turned out for the Women’s March on Washington, D.C., jamming the mall and closing the streets between the White House and the Capitol, the day after Donald Trump’s Inauguration. It was part of the largest single-day protest in U.S. history, and dwarfed the crowd that turned out along the same Inaugural parade route the day before.

March organizers Carmen Perez (left) and Linda Sarsour greeted the enormous crowd. “I will respect the presidency but I will not respect this President,” said Sarsour. Actress and activist America Ferrera denounced Trump’s “platform of hate.” “But the President is not America,” she said. “We are America.”

The crowd was so huge it was difficult to move, and the start of the march was delayed. Outside the White House, marchers in pink knit “pussy hats” chanted, “Welcome to your first day! We will not go away!” Similar marches around the country and on six continents drew more than three million people.
