In a segment aired Wednesday night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow explained how the Texas voter ID law -- made possible by the Supreme Court's decision to gut a key section of the Voting Rights Act -- is causing massive problems for women who've recently been married or divorced.
"Women in Texas who have never done anything weirder under Texas state law than get married and get the married lady ID that Texas required them to get -- women who have done nothing weirder than that in their lives are finding that for the first time in their lives that they are being blocked from voting," she said.
While the ongoing election in Texas this year is a relatively sleepy one due to the absence of high-profile races, the odds are good that this law is going to have a severely negative impact on state Senator Wendy Davis's run for governor next year. She needs Texas women to come out and support her in droves, but the Republican sneak-attack on their right to participate in democracy is well underway.
