Tony Robinson, an unarmed, mixed-race nineteen-year-old, was shot dead by a Madison police officer late Friday night in Madison's Willy (Williamson) Street neighborhood. Protests erupted that night and continued through the weekend with community members, from the Young, Gifted and Black Coalition to local hip hop artists and more, seeking an explanation and demanding accountability for police amid growing national awareness of the prevalence of racial bias in law enforcement. Reporter Rebecca Kemble and I attended rallies througout the weekend.
Another protest today shut down East Washington Avenue. Details of the shooting are to be investigated by an outside agency per Wisconsin law. View this story on Storify.
