Folk singer Ronnie Gilbert died earlier this week. Gilbert, 88, was a founding member of the Weavers along with Pete Seeger, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays. She was the band's sole female member. She started performing in the 1940s, and her political voice was still being heard in the 2000s.
Gilbert wrote for the Progressive several times during her long career as a singer, writer, and activist for social justice. In the November, 2001, she contributed an articled titled "The FBI Knocks Again," Gilbert documented the FBI's repeated investigations on her life as a political activist.
"For the second time in my life—at least—a group that I belong to is being investigated by the FBI. The first was the Weavers."
