Dear Friend,
A couple weeks ago, I had the distinct pleasure of being on a panel with a historic figure: John Dean of Watergate fame.
Dean told some great stories of his time as White House counsel under Nixon.
Dean's very first assignment, he said, came directly from Nixon, and that was to sic the IRS on a newspaper that was critical of Vice President Spiro Agnew.
He also told of how he had to go up to John Ehrlichman to stop Chuck Colson from firebombing the Brookings Institution (Colson said the think tank had a copy of the Pentagon Papers; Dean said there must be better ways to get it, and that bombing Brookings could be a capital offense emanating from the White House).
But Dean was in Madison not to reminisce about the bad old days, but to talk about how Bush-Cheney is "worse than Watergate."
Dean elaborates on this theme in an interview I just did with him, which you can listen to at our website. You also can find Ruth Conniff's great column, "What About Censure?" And I have a related web exclusive, "Pelosi Capitulates on Impeachment." I hope you enjoy these offerings.
Best,
