A great work of fiction as

A great work of fiction as that is all his history is. American Imperialism was not born of this country, yet he paints that we are the ONLY one that has done this. Conquerors throughout history have taken, murdered, enslaved to get what they want. His points have been refuted as bogus, he was a radical sack of wine who poisoned our well with his trash. Glad he's dead.

The 4th of July commemorates

The 4th of July commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration announced, in the name of freedom and liberty, our independence from a tyrannical government. That governments have in the past, do in the present, and will in the future continue to infringe on the rights and lives of people is pretty much a given. When I celebrate the 4th, I don't celebrate nationalism or the idea that America is #1. Rather, I celebrate the idea of political freedom and express my hope that our heritage of constitutional thinking will continue to form our political culture and, in so doing, help us temper the power of our state so that we may better live in harmony with ourselves and others.

IMHO, it is unproductive to the 21 century progressive movement in this country to promote on the 4th of July anti-america flag burning ideas. There is absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating it's birthday. We the people of this country are not perfect but we can at least have one day to raise our colors united in peace and celebration with the hope of making it a more perfect union. Happy 4th of July!

I wish I found this article

I wish I found this article earlier. It accurately supports my view of this misguided "uber-nationalism".

This is paranoid ranting.

This is paranoid ranting. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of America, recognizing its flaws and failures.

I agree wholeheartedly with

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I feel sorry for and annoyed at Americans who don't appreciate what they have. All of the immigrants that I know we're able to thrive in the USA. If there wasn' something special about our country why do people continue to come here?

Yes! In total agreement with

Yes! In total agreement with H. Zinn here. I have read his books and follow him closely, he has been my history teacher, and my son's too. In my personal case, I am not originally from USA, I'm a southamerican and i can see what he is saying. Yet I celebrated today 6/4/14) going to a concert and watching the fireworks with an ample spirit of gratitude for all that I have received from USA in my 23 years living here ( presently I am 50 years old). Abundance as well as spiritual, religious, y political, and intellectual freedom That my country of Origen NeVEr gave me! Today I celebrated being the home and independent that I found in USA...

I have not only rejected the notion of American Exceptionalism, I have been disgusted by it since I was a very young boy.

Growing up in a military, extremely conservative, family made me acutely aware of the brutality of nationalism and the consequential rationalization of that brutality.

Zinn is a complete crackpot

Zinn is a complete crackpot who should be immediately dismissed and ignored. His version of America is based on complete falsehoods and lies. On this July 4. I will proudly fly the American flag once again and remember all of the brave souls who gave their lives that we should become and remain a free nation which is truly exceptional in the world. Rip zinn-man!

Very good article, albeit a

Very good article, albeit a bit on the short side. Still, I've been saying for quite some time to friends and family that nationalism (and patriotism, by extension) is a danger to the USA and other countries. I find it refreshing that at least a few sensible people are to be heard from regarding this issue.
