A few ideas for making Black History Month more meaningful and relevant.
As another college semester approaches, we need to recognize that education has become a business.
We need to consider leaving our schools open for the summer, partially staffed, so that students who have no safe place to go can stay at this refuge. We need summer-long community activities to be expanded and fully funded. We need to keep our children fed, involved and safe.
Universities are businesses. They are in the business of education. There will be no change in the retention rate of black students at predominantly white universities until there is a demonstrated financial benefit (beyond costs) to doing so.
