Intern Testimonials

Our interns are a central part of The Progressive team. Here’s what a few have to say about working with us.

Alice Herman, PSS Intern, 2018-2019

As an intern at the Progressive, I was given soAlice Herman much more latitude than I imagined would be possible in an internship for a national magazine. In addition to copy-editing, drafting headlines, and working events for the Progressive, I was able to pitch and write pieces for the online mag. I developed a sense of the operations of a wide-reaching publication and got a crash course in public education policy in my role as Public School Shakedown intern. Getting to know everyone on staff was awesome.

Tanner Jean-Louise, Editorial Intern, Summer 2016

Tanner Jean-Louis“Working at The Progressive Magazine was an incredibly enriching experience. Though it is an old, nationally distributed and highly respected publication it is not-for-profit and leanly staffed, meaning I had opportunity to do much more substantive and important work than I had expected. I'm currently a law student seeking employment opportunities for after graduation and prospective employers' favorite experience to ask me about is my time at The Progressive. I get to say I gained valuable writing and editing skills under the guidance of The Progressive's talented editors. Lastly, working at The Progressive was a blast and the people I got to work with were delightful.”

Evan Popp, Editorial Intern, Summer 2017

While working at The Progressive, I had the fantastic opportunity of writing shorter stories for the website while also working on a long-term feature length magazine article. This is an ideal internship for those who want to be immersed in the full magazine experience, from editing and fact checking articles to writing stories of your own. At The Progressive, you'll have the chance to join a storied publication and to write articles that matter at a time when social justice oriented journalism has never been more essential.

Hannah Johnson, Editorial Intern, Summer 2017

I am so thankful for my internship at The Progressive. It was truly the perfect place to combine my passions for both journalism and social justice. Everyone on the staff is incredibly supportive and talented, and treat interns as important contributors to the publication. From editing articles to writing content for online, I was able to learn about all aspects of what it takes to run a nationally-read and respected magazine. Also, how cool is it to say that you have written for the same magazine as Noam Chomsky, Martin Luther King Jr. and Bernie Sanders? If you want to create meaningful journalism for a storied publication, apply to The Progressive

We must be aggressive for what is right, if government is to be saved from those who are aggressive for what is wrong. There is work for everyone. The field is large. It is a glorious service, this service for the country.
